Sums of telescoping series

Theory used: Telescoping seriesSeries, convergence, sum

Go to: Exercise 1Exercise 2Exercise 3

Exercise 1

Compute the sum of Mengoli’s series

The general term is decomposed into partial fractions: looking for one finds and . The series is therefore telescoping with : in the partial sum each term cancels with the term of the next summand, and the first and the last remain. Since , the partial sums tend to , therefore the series converges with sum .

Exercise 2

Compute the sum of the series

The partial fraction decomposition gives and , therefore is factored out. Here the cancellation happens at distance two: the term cancels with the that appears two summands later. Hence the first two positive terms, and , survive, together with the last two negative ones, and . The latter tend to , therefore the partial sums tend to .

Exercise 3

Compute the sum of the series

For the argument of the logarithm is positive, therefore the general term is defined. One factors and splits the logarithm of the product into the sum of the logarithms. Setting one gets , therefore the general term is exactly and the series is telescoping. The partial sum equals ; since and the logarithm is continuous, , hence the series converges with sum .
