Antiderivatives and indefinite integral
1. Antiderivative and indefinite integral
Let with an interval. A function is an antiderivative of on if is differentiable and for every . The indefinite integral of is the set of all antiderivatives of and is denoted by . For example is an antiderivative of , because its derivative is . Finding antiderivatives is the inverse operation of differentiation; together with the fundamental formula of calculus it reduces the computation of definite integrals to finding an antiderivative.
2. Two antiderivatives differ by a constant
If and are antiderivatives of on the interval , there exists such that for every . Therefore, once an antiderivative is found, the indefinite integral is described by the expression
Proof
Let . The function is differentiable on and for every . Let be two points of . Since is an interval, , therefore is continuous on and differentiable on and Lagrange’s mean value theorem applies: there exists such that
Hence takes the same value at every pair of points of , that is, it is constant: for every , from which .
Remark
The hypothesis that the domain is an interval cannot be removed. The function has domain and its antiderivatives are for and for , with two independent constants. The expression implies that one works on one of the two intervals.
The table of elementary integrals
1. Elementary integrals
From the table of derivatives, read backward:
Every formula is verified by differentiating the right-hand side.
2. Elementary integrals in composite form
If a function appears in place of and the factor appears in the integrand, the chain rule, read backward, gives
These integrals are called almost immediate: one recognizes in the integrand the derivative , possibly up to a multiplicative constant.
Example
In the first integral the numerator is the derivative of the denominator , therefore the formula for applies. In the second the factor is the derivative of , therefore the formula for with applies.
