Theory used: Geometric seriesSeries, convergence, sum
Go to: Exercise 1Exercise 2Exercise 3
Exercise 1
Compute the sum of the series
The series is geometric with ratio . Since , the series converges and the sum is the first term divided by . The first term is the one with index , that is, , therefore the sum equals .
Exercise 2
Compute the sum of the series
The general term is not yet in the form , therefore it is rewritten: , hence . The constant comes out of the sum by linearity. What remains is a geometric series with ratio , with , starting from : the sum is the first term divided by , that is, . Multiplying by the constant gives .
Exercise 3
Compute the sum of the series
The factors , and have the same exponent, therefore the general term can be gathered into a single power: the ratio is . Since , the series converges even with a negative ratio. The index starts from , hence the first term is and the sum is the first term divided by . The result is .
