Exercise 1
Compute, without carrying out the divisions, the remainder of the division of by and by .
The remainders are and .
By the remainder theorem, the remainder of the division of by is the value , so a single evaluation of the polynomial is enough. In the first division the divisor is , therefore and the remainder is .
The divisor is written as , so and the remainder is . Since both remainders are nonzero, by Ruffini’s theorem neither nor divides .
Exercise 2
Using Ruffini’s rule, find the quotient and the remainder of the division of by .
The polynomial lacks the term of degree , so in the first row of the scheme the corresponding coefficient is ; the number on the left is , because the divisor is .
The first coefficient comes down unchanged. Then the multiply-and-add step is repeated: and ; then and ; finally and . The first three numbers in the row of results are the coefficients of the quotient, which has degree , and the last one is the remainder.
The remainder theorem provides the check: , which equals the remainder in the scheme.
Exercise 3
Find so that divides , and write the division for the value found.
For , with Ruffini’s rule:
By Ruffini’s theorem, divides if and only if . The value depends on and equals , so the divisibility condition becomes the equation , whose solution is .
With Ruffini’s scheme with proceeds as follows: the coefficient comes down; and ; and ; and . The remainder is , as required, and the quotient is , therefore the division provides the factorization shown.
