The logarithm
Logarithm
For , and , the logarithm to base of is the exponent to which must be raised to obtain :
The logarithm exists only for positive arguments, because for every . From the definition follow the two identities
which are used to pass from exponential form to logarithmic form and vice versa; equations of the types and are based on these identities.

The properties of logarithms
1. Properties of logarithms
For , and , :
The three formulas hold when the arguments and are positive, therefore before applying them to expressions containing the unknown the domain conditions must be written. In equations and inequalities they are used to combine several logarithms into a single logarithm.
One example for each property
In each case the arguments are positive numbers, so the properties apply.
2. Change of base
For both different from and :
It makes it possible to express any logarithm in a chosen base, for example in base or in base , which are available on a calculator. For example .
