Limits and continuity
What it means for a function to approach a value, how limits are computed and indeterminate forms resolved, how asymptotes are found, what a continuous function is and what the intermediate zero theorem and the Weierstrass theorem guarantee.
Finite limit at a point
Let be defined on an open interval containing , except possibly at the point itself. We write
if for every there exists such that, for every in the domain,
In other words, is as close to as we like, within the tolerance , provided is close enough to , within the distance . The condition excludes the point , so the value , if it exists, does not matter. For , once is fixed, we have , which is less than when ; therefore suffices.
Right-hand limit and left-hand limit
If in the definition of limit only the are considered, we obtain the right-hand limit, ; with only the we obtain the left-hand limit, . The limit exists if and only if the right-hand limit and the left-hand limit exist and are equal. They are needed for piecewise-defined functions, at the points where one formula switches to the other. For the function equal to for and to for , the left-hand limit at is and the right-hand limit is , so the limit at does not exist.
Infinite limits and limits at infinity
The other situations are described in the same way, replacing the neighborhoods of a number with half-lines.
- if for every there exists such that for , that is, if near the values of exceed any threshold. The limit is defined in the same way.
- if for every there exists such that for , that is, if for large values of the variable the values of stay close to . The limit as is defined in the same way.
- if for every there exists such that for .
For example as , as , while tends to as and to as . In economic models the limit as describes what happens for large quantities; for example the average cost tends to as .
