Standard limits and comparison of infinities

Theory used: Standard limitsComparison of infinitiesRules for computing limits

Go to: Exercise 1Exercise 2Exercise 3

Exercise 1

Compute

Both limits are in the form and resemble the standard limits of the logarithm and of the exponential, but the argument is or instead of . We multiply and divide by the missing number, so that the same argument appears in the denominator, that is in the first case, in the second. With the substitution , or , the variable tends to when tends to , and the fraction becomes exactly a standard limit, which equals . The numerical factors remain, so the limits are and .

Exercise 2

Compute

The base tends to and the exponent to , so the form is , which is indeterminate. We try to reduce it to the standard limit . In the first case we set , so that and the exponent becomes ; since , the power tends to and the limit is . In the second case we set and the exponent becomes , so the limit is . The same procedure, with in place of , gives the limit of continuous compounding.

Exercise 3

Compute

In the first quotient powers and exponentials appear. By the comparison of infinities the exponential grows faster than any power, so we factor out in the numerator and in the denominator. The ratios and tend to , and the limit is , because for large the powers are negligible compared with the exponentials. In the second quotient the logarithm is compared with the power , which grows faster than even though the exponent is small, therefore the limit is .
