Exercise 1

Let be defined on the interval . Find the range of , determine whether is injective and find the largest interval containing on which is injective.

x y -1123456-6-4-2246 O
y=x2−6x+5y = x^{2} - 6 x + 5
On the parabola falls from to the minimum at and rises back to : the range is , and the value is taken twice

The function is quadratic with , so by the theorem on the vertex of the parabola its minimum value is attained at and equals . The vertex lies in the interval ; to the left of the vertex the function decreases and to the right it increases, therefore the maximum value on the interval is the larger of the values at the endpoints, and . The graph on is an unbroken arc of a parabola, so the function takes all the values between the minimum and the maximum, and the range is ; this property will be justified by the intermediate value theorem in the topic on limits and continuity.

The function is not injective on , because the two different values and have the same image . It is instead increasing, and hence injective, on the interval , which lies to the right of the vertex. No larger interval containing works, because adding points to the left of gives values already taken to the right of the vertex.

Exercise 2

Let for . Prove that is increasing and find its range.

By the definition of increasing function, we compare the images of any two values of the domain. For positive numbers the reciprocal reverses inequalities, so ; multiplying by , which is negative, the inequality is reversed again, and adding to both sides gives . Therefore is increasing on .

To find the range, we look for the values for which the equation has a solution in the domain. Isolating gives , which makes sense for and is positive exactly when . Hence a value is taken if and only if , and the range is . The value is never reached, because is always positive.
