Derivatives from the definition and tangent lines
Theory used: Derivative at a pointTangent line
Go to: Exercise 1Exercise 2
Exercise 1
Compute from the definition the derivative of at the point and write the tangent line to the graph at that point.
The difference quotient compares the value of at with the value at , divided by . Bringing the difference of the two fractions to a common denominator, the numerator that remains is , which cancels with the in front. Before the simplification the limit was of the form ; after it, the limit is computed by substituting and gives . The tangent line passes through the point with slope , and is . The slope is negative, consistent with the fact that decreases for .
Exercise 2
Compute from the definition the derivative of at the point and write the tangent line. Use it to approximate .
The difference quotient contains a difference between a root and a number, and as it is of the form . It is rationalized by multiplying numerator and denominator by ; in this way the numerator becomes and cancels. The limit equals , in agreement with the formula . The tangent line at has slope . Near the graph and the tangent almost overlap, so the value of the tangent at , that is, , approximates
