Exercise 1
A harmonic plane radio wave of frequency propagates in vacuum, and the amplitude of its electric field is . Compute the wavelength, the period, the angular frequency, the wave number and the amplitude of the magnetic field.
In vacuum all electromagnetic waves propagate with speed , and for a harmonic wave , so the wavelength is the ratio of to the frequency. The period is the reciprocal of the frequency, the angular frequency is and the wave number is ; as a check, , which is exactly . By the relation between the electric field and the magnetic field of a plane wave, the amplitudes satisfy , hence the magnetic field has an amplitude of only .
Exercise 2
A harmonic plane wave of green light, with wavelength , propagates in vacuum in the positive direction of the axis. Its electric field is directed along the axis and is
Compute the frequency, angular frequency and wave number, and write the expression of the magnetic field .
Frequency, angular frequency and wave number follow from and from the definitions of the harmonic wave. For the magnetic field we use the relation between the electric field and the magnetic field: in a plane traveling wave oscillates in phase with , has magnitude , is perpendicular both to and to the direction of propagation, and points in the direction of propagation. The electric field is along and the wave travels toward , so is along the axis. Since and , when is positive the magnetic field must point toward ; hence and the magnetic field points along when .
Exercise 3
A harmonic plane wave propagates in vacuum in the positive direction of the axis, with the electric field directed along the axis. At the instant the electric field is , with , and two consecutive maxima are located at and at . Compute the wavelength and the frequency, the magnetic field vector at the point at the instant , and the first instant at which the electric field at that point vanishes.
At the instant the field is periodic in space with period , so the distance between two consecutive maxima is the wavelength, , and from it follows that . The wave travels in the positive direction of the axis, hence its expression is , which for gives back the given profile.
By the relation between the electric field and the magnetic field, with along and propagation toward , the magnetic field is along . At the point , at the instant , the argument is and the electric field is maximum; since the two fields are in phase, the magnetic field is also maximum and equals in the direction of .
At the same point the electric field vanishes for the first time when the argument goes from to , that is, after a quarter of a period, about 3.3 ns. The same result is obtained by observing that in that time the profile is translated by , so the point of the profile that at was at the origin, where the field is zero, arrives at .
