Motion in a plane: projectiles and circular motion

Problems to solve on your own. The final solution appears with the button below each problem; each exercise also has its own page, to share with the link.

1. Horizontal launch from a table

A small ball leaves the edge of a table high horizontally and hits the floor from the vertical through the edge. Neglecting air resistance, compute the velocity with which the ball left the table.

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

2. Maximum height, range and time of flight

A projectile is launched from the ground with velocity inclined at to the horizontal, on level ground. Neglecting air resistance, compute the time of flight, the maximum height and the range.

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

3. Minimum speed for a given range

An object launched from the ground must land from the launch point, on level ground. Neglecting air resistance, compute the minimum launch speed that allows this and the corresponding launch angle.

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

4. Oblique launch from a balcony

From a balcony high a stone is thrown with velocity inclined at upward. Neglecting air resistance, compute after how much time and at what horizontal distance from the base of the balcony the stone hits the ground, and the magnitude of its velocity at impact.

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

5. Heading of a plane in a crosswind

A plane flies at relative to the air and must reach a city located north of the starting point. A uniform wind of blows toward the east. Compute in which direction the plane must head, its velocity relative to the ground and the duration of the trip.

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

6. Radius of curvature at the highest point

A projectile is launched with velocity inclined at to the horizontal. Neglecting air resistance, compute the radius of curvature of the trajectory at the highest point.

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

7. Bicycle wheel

A bicycle travels at and its wheels have radius . Assuming that the wheels roll without slipping, so that the velocity of the center of the wheel is , compute the angular velocity of the wheels and the number of revolutions per minute.

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

8. Centripetal acceleration on a curve

A car travels at a constant speed of around a circular curve of radius . Compute its acceleration.

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

9. Orbit of the Space Station

The International Space Station travels in an orbit that can be considered circular, of radius measured from the center of the Earth, with a period of minutes. Compute its speed and its centripetal acceleration.

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

10. Acceleration of an engine

The shaft of an engine goes from to revolutions per minute in , with constant angular acceleration. Compute the angular acceleration and the number of revolutions completed in the .

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

11. Acceleration of a point on a disk

A disk starts from rest and rotates with constant angular acceleration . For a point from the axis, compute tangential acceleration, centripetal acceleration and magnitude of the acceleration at time .

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

12. Intrinsic components from an equation of motion

A point moves with equation of motion , with in meters and in seconds. At time compute the magnitude of the velocity, the tangential and normal components of the acceleration and the radius of curvature of the trajectory.

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.

13. Swimmer crossing a river

A swimmer crosses a river wide, swimming perpendicular to the banks with velocity relative to the water; the current has velocity . Compute the velocity of the swimmer relative to the bank, the crossing time and the downstream displacement.

Solution available to those who have unlocked the subject.
