Uniform convergence on subintervals

Theory used: Uniform convergenceSup criterionContinuity of the uniform limit

Go to: Exercise 1Exercise 2Exercise 3

Exercise 1

Study the pointwise and uniform convergence of on , on and on with .

The pointwise limit distinguishes two cases: for the geometric sequence tends to , while at every term equals . On the are continuous and the pointwise limit is discontinuous, so by the theorem on the continuity of the uniform limit the convergence cannot be uniform. On the limit is the zero function, which is continuous, but the sup criterion is not satisfied: since as , the supremum of on equals for every , and it does not tend to . On the function is increasing, so the maximum is , which tends to because ; therefore the convergence is uniform on every interval with .

Exercise 2

Study the pointwise and uniform convergence of on and on with .

x y -3-2-1123-2-112 O
y=arctan⁡xy = \arctan xy=arctan⁡(4x)y = \arctan \left(4 x\right)y=arctan⁡(20x)y = \arctan \left(20 x\right)
for : for large the graph approaches for and for (dashed lines), with the transition concentrated near the origin

For fixed the argument tends to , so ; for the limit is , and at every term equals . The pointwise limit is therefore discontinuous at the origin, while every is continuous, so the convergence is not uniform on . On the half-line the difference is positive and decreasing in , since the arctangent is increasing, so the sup is attained at the first point . Since , the quantity tends to , and the sup criterion guarantees uniform convergence on for every .

Exercise 3

Study the pointwise and uniform convergence of on and on with .

For each fixed the exponent tends to , so and the pointwise limit is the zero function. The function is decreasing in , therefore on the supremum is found at the left endpoint: as the values tend to , so for every and the convergence is not uniform. In this case the pointwise limit is continuous on , so the example shows that the theorem on the continuity of the uniform limit does not have a converse. On monotonicity gives , which tends to because is fixed, therefore the convergence is uniform on every half-line .
