Vector field
A vector field on an open set is a function that assigns a vector to each point,
where and , the components of the field, are scalar functions on . In space a vector field on has three components, . The field is said to be of class if its components are of class . A vector field is the mathematical model of a force that depends on the point, such as the gravitational field or an electric field; the typical picture shows at each point of the plane an arrow with the direction and the length of the associated vector.
Example
is a vector field of class on . At each point the vector is perpendicular to the position vector , since the scalar product is zero, hence the arrows rotate around the origin counterclockwise. An example in space is the field , of class on .
Remark
Every scalar function of class on an open set generates a vector field, its gradient . The central question of this chapter is the inverse one: given a field , determine whether there exists a scalar function of which is the gradient. For the gradient we refer to the chapter on differential calculus.
Work and circulation
The line integral of the second kind of a field along an oriented curve is called the work of along . In the plane it is also written in the form
which in the computation becomes . If the curve is closed, that is, , the work is called the circulation of along and is denoted by
The name comes from physics: if is a force, the integral measures the work done by the force on a material point traveling along the curve. Circulation is the tool with which non-conservative fields are recognized, as the characterization theorem shows.
