Trigonometric and exponential forms in the various quadrants

Theory used: Trigonometric form and argumentEuler's formula and exponential formModulus and its properties

Go to: Exercise 1Exercise 2Exercise 3

Exercise 1

Write in trigonometric and exponential form

The modulus is the square root of , so . The point has positive real part, therefore it lies in the first quadrant and the principal argument coincides with the arctangent of the ratio , that is , without any correction.

As a check, and , which are the original real part and imaginary part.

Exercise 2

Write in trigonometric and exponential form

The modulus is . The point has negative real part and positive imaginary part, so it lies in the second quadrant; the arctangent of equals , which is an angle in the fourth quadrant, therefore, according to the cases of the principal argument, is added and one obtains .

As a check, and , so and , which coincide with the real part and the imaginary part of .

Exercise 3

Write in trigonometric and exponential form

Re Im -2-11-2-11 O zθ
lies in the third quadrant: the principal argument is measured clockwise from the positive real semi-axis

The modulus is , the same as in the first exercise, because changing the sign of the real part and the imaginary part does not change the modulus. The point has both coordinates negative, so it lies in the third quadrant; the ratio is positive and its arctangent equals , an angle in the first quadrant. Since and , according to the cases of the principal argument is subtracted and one obtains , which belongs to the interval .

As a check, and , so and , as required.
