Integration by parts
Theory used: Integration by parts
Go to: Exercise 1Exercise 2Exercise 3
Exercise 1
Compute
The integrand is the product of a polynomial and an exponential, therefore one integrates by parts differentiating the polynomial: we set and , from which and . The new integral is that of , which is immediate. Differentiating gives , therefore the result is correct.
Exercise 2
Compute
When the logarithm appears it is convenient to differentiate it, because its derivative is a rational function. We therefore set and , from which and . In the new integral the product simplifies to , hence what remains is the immediate integral of multiplied by , which equals .
Exercise 3
Compute
Setting and integrating by parts twice, we obtain
From the equality it follows that , therefore
In the first integration by parts we set and , therefore the integral of appears. In this one we set and ; since the derivative of is , in the integral of the original integral reappears, added to . The equality obtained is an equation in the unknown : moving to the left-hand side gives and one divides by . The constant is added at the end, because the result represents the set of all antiderivatives.
