Theory used: Tangent line to the graphDerivative of sum, product and quotientDerivatives of the elementary functions
Go to: Exercise 1Exercise 2Exercise 3
Exercise 1
Write the equation of the tangent line to the graph of at the point with abscissa .
The tangent line is .
The tangent line passes through the point and has slope , therefore the two values and are needed. The value of the function is . The derivative is computed with the sum and power rules and equals , hence the slope is . Substituting into the tangent line formula one obtains , that is, the line .
Exercise 2
Find the points of the graph of at which the tangent line is horizontal and write the corresponding tangents.
The points are and ; the tangents are the lines and .
A line is horizontal when its slope is zero, therefore one looks for the points where . The derivative equals and vanishes for , that is, at the two points and . The corresponding ordinates are and . At a point with a horizontal tangent the tangent is the constant line through the point, hence the two tangents are and .
Exercise 3
Find the point of the graph of at which the tangent line is parallel to the line and write the tangent.
The point is ; the tangent is the line .
Two lines are parallel when they have the same slope, therefore one looks for the point where the derivative equals , the slope of the given line. The derivative of the logarithm is and the equation has the unique solution , which belongs to the domain . The ordinate of the point of tangency is . The tangent passes through with slope , hence its equation is , parallel to the given line and distinct from it.
