Exercise 1
Find the absolute maximum and minimum of on the rectangle .
The rectangle is closed and bounded and is a polynomial, hence continuous; by the Weierstrass theorem the absolute maximum and minimum exist. First we look for the interior stationary points. The system gives the single point , which is interior to because and .
The boundary consists of four sides. On the horizontal sides the function becomes with , which goes from , at , to , at . On the side we have , between and ; on the side we have , between and . Comparing all the values found, the largest is , at the vertices and , and the smallest is , at the interior point . Hence the absolute maximum is and the absolute minimum is .
Exercise 2
Find the absolute maximum and minimum of on the triangle with vertices , and .
The triangle is the set , , , closed and bounded, and is continuous, so the absolute extrema exist by the Weierstrass theorem. The first-order system gives the point , which is interior because the coordinates are positive and their sum is .
On each side the equation of the side is substituted into . On the side one obtains the parabola , with vertex at . On the side one obtains , increasing on , which gives no new points besides the vertices. On the hypotenuse one substitutes :
with vertex at , that is, at the point . The three vertices are added to the candidates. The smallest value is , at the interior point, and the largest is , at the vertex ; therefore the absolute minimum is and the absolute maximum is .
Exercise 3
Find the absolute maximum and minimum of on the disk .
The closed disk is closed and bounded and is continuous, so the absolute maximum and minimum exist. The only stationary point is , interior to the disk because .
The boundary is the circle . Only appears in the function, therefore it is convenient to substitute , and on the circle becomes the function of one variable , with . Its derivative vanishes at , which corresponds to the two points of the circle; the endpoints correspond to the points and . Comparing the values , , and gives the absolute maximum and the absolute minimum .
