Areas of surfaces of revolution and portions of spheres and cylinders

Theory used: Area of a surface of revolutionArea of a surface

Go to: Exercise 1Exercise 2Exercise 3

Exercise 1

Compute the area of the lateral surface of the cone obtained by rotating about the -axis the segment with equations , for .

The curve generating the surface is the segment , , with , so the formula for the area of a surface of revolution applies. The derivatives are and , therefore the factor is constant. The integral reduces to , and since , the area equals . The same value is obtained from the elementary formula for the lateral surface of the cone, with base radius and slant height .

Exercise 2

Compute the area of the spherical cap

x z -2-1123-2-112 O z = 1φ
Cross-section with the plane : the cap is the part of the sphere with , that is, with colatitude between and

The cap is a portion of the sphere of radius , so we use the spherical parametrization, whose area element is . The condition is translated into the parameters: since , the inequality is equivalent to , that is, , while runs over the full turn. The integral in gives and the one in gives , so the area is . The result is consistent with the formula for the area of a cap, with and height .

Exercise 3

Compute the area of the portion of the cylinder lying between the plane and the plane .

θ t 1234567123456789 O
The parameter domain of the portion of the cylinder: and ; the function lies between and

The cylinder of radius is parametrized by the angle and the height , and the area element is , since for the cylinder the norm of the normal vector is the radius. On the cylinder , so the upper plane cuts the surface at height ; since for every , the upper height stays above the plane and the parameter region is with . The inner integral in gives the length of the generating line. In the integral in the term has zero integral over the period, therefore what remains is , and the area equals .
