Normal vector and tangent plane to parametric surfaces

Theory used: Regular surfaceNormal vectorTangent plane to a surface

Go to: Exercise 1Exercise 2Exercise 3

Exercise 1

Find the normal vector and the tangent plane to the surface

at the point corresponding to .

The point of the surface is obtained by substituting into the parametrization, so . The derivative vectors and are computed by differentiating the three components with respect to and with respect to , and are then evaluated at the point. The normal vector is their cross product, which is expanded with the symbolic determinant: the first component is , the second is , the third is . Since , the surface is regular at the point and the tangent plane exists. The tangent plane passes through and is orthogonal to , therefore its equation is , which simplified becomes .

Exercise 2

Find the normal vector and the tangent plane to the helicoid

at the point corresponding to .

The point is obtained by substitution: since and , we get . The vector is obtained by differentiating with respect to with held constant, the vector by differentiating with respect to with held constant. The cross product of the two vectors evaluated at the point gives . The normal vector is not zero, so the tangent plane is the plane through orthogonal to , that is, .

Exercise 3

Given the sphere of radius parametrized by

compute the normal vector at the point corresponding to , verify that it is parallel to the position vector and write the tangent plane.

x z -2-1123-2-112 O N√3 x + z = 4P₀
Cross-section with the plane : the normal vector at has the direction of the radius and the trace of the tangent plane is tangent to the circle

At the given point we have and , so . The two derivative vectors, evaluated at the point, are and , and their cross product is . Factoring out we obtain , that is, a positive multiple of the position vector ; therefore the normal to the sphere is radial and, with this parametrization, points outward. The tangent plane is the plane through orthogonal to the direction , that is, . The constant term coincides with the square of the radius, in agreement with the general formula for the tangent plane to a sphere centered at the origin.
