Exercise 1
Determine whether the curve
is regular and compute the tangent vector at the point .
The components and are polynomials, hence the curve is of class and the derivative vector is computed component by component. The first component of equals for every , therefore the vector is never zero and the curve is regular on the whole of . The tangent vector at the point is .
Exercise 2
Verify that the helix
is regular and compute the unit tangent vector at the point .
The components are functions of class and the derivative vector has third component constantly equal to , hence never vanishes and the curve is regular. The norm of the tangent vector equals for every , since . At the point the tangent vector is ; dividing by the norm one obtains the unit tangent vector.
Exercise 3
Determine whether the curve
is regular or piecewise regular.
The curve is of class because the components are polynomials. The derivative vector vanishes when both components are zero, and the system has the unique solution , which is an interior point of the interval ; hence the curve is not regular on . On the two subintervals and the point is an endpoint, therefore does not vanish at any interior point of the two pieces and each restriction is regular. The curve is therefore piecewise regular with the partition . At the point the trace has a cusp: at the instant the velocity vanishes and the first component changes sign, so the horizontal direction of motion is reversed.
