Exercise 1
Compute the work of the field
along the segment from to .
The cross derivatives equal and and do not coincide, hence the field is not conservative and the work must be computed with the definition. The segment is parametrized by for , with derivative . Substituting the parametrization into the components of the field one obtains , and the scalar product with equals . The integral of this function over gives .
Exercise 2
Compute the work of the field
along the arc of the parabola from to .
The field is not conservative, since the derivative of with respect to equals and the derivative of with respect to equals . The arc of the parabola is parametrized by and for , hence . The components of the field along the curve are and , therefore the integrand is . The work is negative: along this arc the field does resistive work, since on average it forms an obtuse angle with the direction of motion.
Exercise 3
Compute the circulation of the field
along the circle traversed counterclockwise, and deduce that the field is not conservative.
On the unit circle the field equals , which coincides with the tangent vector : the field is at every point tangent to the circle and agrees with the direction of travel. The scalar product is therefore and the circulation equals . By the characterization theorem a conservative field has zero circulation along every closed curve; since this circulation is nonzero, the field is not conservative on . The same result is reached with the cross derivatives, which equal and .
