Exercise 1

Find the values of for which the vectors and are orthogonal.

Two vectors are orthogonal when their dot product is zero, so the condition translates into an equation in the parameter. The dot product in components is the polynomial , which factors as . Therefore the vectors are orthogonal for and for . For , for example, one has , and .

Exercise 2

Decompose the vector as the sum of a vector parallel to and a vector orthogonal to .

x y 12341234 O uvv∥v⊥
is the sum of , on the line of (dashed), and , orthogonal to that line

The required decomposition is the one in the theorem on the orthogonal projection: the parallel part is the projection of onto the direction of , the orthogonal part is the difference between and the projection. The coefficient equals , therefore and . The dot product is zero, therefore the orthogonal part is indeed orthogonal to , and the sum of the two parts gives back .

Exercise 3

Compute the orthogonal projection of onto the direction of and the component of orthogonal to .

The procedure is the same as in the plane, with three components. The dot product equals and the square of the magnitude of equals , so the coefficient of the projection is and the orthogonal projection is . Subtracting the projection from gives the orthogonal component , and the zero dot product with confirms the computation. The number is the signed length of the projection, positive because the angle between and is acute.

Exercise 4

Given the triangle with vertices , , , find the foot of the altitude from and the length of the altitude .

The foot of the altitude is the point of the line such that is orthogonal to . Applying the vector at the point and decomposing it with respect to the direction of , the parallel part is and the orthogonal part is . The coefficient of the projection equals , therefore is the midpoint of the side , that is, . The altitude is the magnitude of the orthogonal part, therefore . As a check, .
