Exercise 1
Write the equation of the plane passing through and parallel to the plane .
Two parallel planes have parallel normal vectors, so the required plane has the same normal vector as , which is read off the coefficients of , , : . By the Cartesian equation of the plane through a point with a given normal vector we write with and . Expanding the products gives the plane . As a check, the point satisfies the equation, since . The plane found is distinct from , because the constant term is different from .
Exercise 2
Write the equation of the plane passing through the points , , .
The vectors and are parallel to the plane and are not parallel to each other, since their components are not proportional; therefore the three points are not collinear and the plane through three points is unique. The cross product is orthogonal to both, so it is a normal vector to the plane. The result can be replaced by its opposite , because the normal vector is defined up to a nonzero factor. Writing the equation through the point gives the plane . As a check, and satisfy the equation, since and .
Exercise 3
Write the equation of the plane that contains the line , , and the point .
First we check that does not belong to . The first two equations with , give , while the third with gives ; hence and the plane containing and is unique. The plane contains the point of , obtained for , and is parallel both to the direction vector and to the vector . These two vectors are not parallel, therefore their cross product is a normal vector. The equation through gives the plane . As a check, the generic point of satisfies the equation, since for every , and satisfies it as well, since . The variable does not appear in the equation, so the plane is parallel to the -axis.
Exercise 4
Write the equation of the plane passing through and perpendicular to the two planes and .
Two planes are perpendicular if and only if their normal vectors are orthogonal, so the normal vector of the required plane must be orthogonal both to and to . The vectors and are not parallel, therefore the vectors orthogonal to both are the multiples of the cross product , and one can choose . The plane through with this normal vector is . As a check, and , and the point satisfies the equation, since . The plane found is perpendicular to the line of intersection of and , which has direction vector precisely .
