Exercise 1
Find a rotation that brings the conic
to canonical form, the canonical form and the axes of symmetry.
Ellipse with center at the origin, semi-axes and ; major axis , minor axis .
The conic has no first-degree terms, so the center is the origin and a rotation is enough. The eigenvalues of are and . For the matrix , with the identity matrix, has rows equal to , so the eigenspace is given by and is spanned by ; for the rows are and , and the eigenspace is spanned by . Normalizing the two eigenvectors gives the columns of , which has determinant . In the substitution , because the rotation preserves distances from the origin, and . The equation becomes , that is, the ellipse . The semi-axis lies on the -axis, which has the direction of , so the major axis is the line and the minor axis is .
Exercise 2
Reduce to canonical form the conic
writing the rigid motion and the equations of the axes.
Ellipse with center and semi-axes and .
We compute the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of . For the matrix has first row , so the eigenspace is , spanned by ; for the first row is , the eigenspace is , spanned by . The two vectors have norm , and the matrix with columns and has determinant , so it is a rotation. The center is found with the system of the center: from the second equation , and the solution is , which is checked by substituting into both equations. The polynomial evaluated at the center equals , and by the canonical form of central conics the equation in the new coordinates is . As a check, , which coincides with . The axes are the lines through the center with the directions of the eigenvectors: with direction we obtain , which contains the semi-axis and is therefore the major axis; with direction we obtain .
Exercise 3
Reduce to canonical form the conic
and write the equations of the axes and of the asymptotes.
Rectangular hyperbola with center , canonical form , asymptotes and .
Since and , the conic, if it is not degenerate, is a rectangular hyperbola. The center solves the system of the center: multiplying the first equation by and the second by and adding gives , hence and . The value of the polynomial at the center is , hence and the conic is indeed non-degenerate. The eigenvalues are ; the eigenspace of is , spanned by , that of is , spanned by , and the matrix with these normalized columns has determinant . The canonical form is , that is, . The axes are the lines through with directions and ; the first, , is the transverse axis. For the asymptotes we use the rule : the polynomial factors as the product , as can be checked by expanding. The two asymptotes have normal vectors and , which are orthogonal, in agreement with the fact that the hyperbola is rectangular.
