Exercise 1
Write the matrix associated with the function
with respect to the standard bases and compute .
The domain has dimension and the codomain dimension , so the matrix has columns and rows. With respect to the standard bases the -th row contains the coefficients of , , in the -th component of ; does not appear in the second component, therefore its coefficient is . The columns are , and . By the theorem on the coordinates of the image, is obtained by multiplying the matrix by the column , and the result is , in agreement with direct substitution into the formula.
Exercise 2
Let be linear with
Write and compute .
The columns of the matrix with respect to the standard bases are the images of the vectors of the standard basis of the domain, so is written by placing and side by side as columns. Since , by linearity , and adding componentwise we obtain the explicit formula, which coincides with the product . Substituting and we find .
Exercise 3
Let be defined by . Write the matrix of with respect to the basis and use it to compute .
The matrix is built by computing the image of each basis polynomial and writing its coordinates as a column. The derivative of is zero, so the first column is zero; has coordinates and has coordinates . The polynomial has coordinates , and the product with the matrix gives the coordinates of the image. The direct computation confirms the result, since and .
Exercise 4
Write the matrix of transposition , , with respect to the standard basis , and use it to compute the transpose of
The space has dimension , so the matrix of is . The matrix has the entry in position , and its transpose has the entry in position , that is ; in the same way , while and remain fixed. The coordinates of are and form the second column, those of are and form the third. The matrix has coordinates by the coordinate isomorphism, and the matrix of swaps the second and third coordinates. We obtain the coordinates , which correspond to the transpose .
